Job Description

Senior Manager, Community Finance - Capital Officer

External Affairs works with many external and internal stakeholders to envision and create a world of greater socioeconomic opportunity through advocating for an inclusive society, building thriving communities, and creating financial tools that enrich lives. Our teams include Communications, Community Impact and Investment, Community Finance, CRA Strategy and Program Management, the Government and Political Affairs Group, Regulatory Relations, and Strategy and Engagement. Through our teams, we have unparalleled access to a diverse group of motivated changemakers similarly focused on the ingredients for a more perfect future.

We focus on innovation and opportunity -- on long term well being for our associates, customers, and communities. We dream in disruption -- at scale -- especially for those who have been underserved. This is the language of changing things for the better, of the future, and…of Capital One.

Community Finance’s commitment to impact is clear. In 2022, the company provided more than $7.19 billion in community development loans, and we have been an industry leader in community development lending for many years. Our Community Finance team is one of the top providers of affordable housing opportunities in banking. Since its inception, Capital One has invested almost $17 billion in affordable housing and provided financing for more than 160,000 affordable housing units.

As we continue to build our commitment to our customers and communities, we would like for you to consider being part of this very special team.

The Opportunity and Role:

Capital One’s Community Finance team originates debt and equity to support affordable housing development. Community Finance provides debt financing, and invests in low income housing credits through proprietary and multi equity funds. The Capital Officer team is primarily responsible for managing relationships with developers and other industry stakeholders. Capital Officers market our products, understand the competitive landscape and market needs, identify opportunities that align with Capital One’s overall strategy, and elevate market intelligence to key partners in External Affairs and across the company.

We are seeking a passionate, motivated, emotionally intelligent Senior Manager to be an active member of a team focused on sourcing mission- and strategy-aligned multi-family housing development opportunities. Your will help enhance our understanding of communities and Capital One’s opportunities to promote socioeconomic mobility. Through your expertise and relationship-management skills, you will build upon our strong industry reputation while challenging the status quo and actively contributing to our next chapter of impact and innovation.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Wired for Collaboration and Connection. You thrive in a matrixed organization because you know that together we can do better.

  • Obsessed with building and cultivating relationships. You love the chance to share your perspective, to hear the perspectives of others, and to figure out how teams can collaborate.

  • Intellectually Curious, with a strong Point of View. You ask why, you explore, you’re comfortable with ambiguity, you’re hungry to learn and a seeker of new challenges. You use this curiosity to develop and then refine, and refine, and refine your POVs.

  • A doer. You love action, you try things and sometimes you fail. You can get around your own roadblocks and you remove obstacles for your team to stay focused on enterprise goals.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

Leadership and Innovation:

  • Develop and maintain the company’s relationships with existing clients and industry stakeholders; gather market intelligence by forging deep relationships; understand how Capital One shows up in our local communities and how we can help move the needle on socioeconomic mobility.

  • Share market intelligence with peers across the company to deepen our shared understanding, promote collaboration, and maximize impact.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to establish business goals, plan portfolio growth, manage new and existing relationships, and perform proper pre-qualification, structuring, and pricing of debt and proprietary investments.

  • Manage risk, support new business initiatives and continuously well-managed processes.

  • Adopt an enterprise mindset in strategy development and implementation, considering both the internal and external landscape.

  • Proactively embrace and lead through change, with candor and optimism; evolve to meet new and emerging opportunities and challenges.

  • Innovate and find efficiencies in the application of data and technology to support business opportunities.

  • Stay informed and demonstrate subject matter expertise, including attending and participating in industry workshops, conferences, etc.

Talent Development:

  • Contribute to an inclusive, positive team environment of trust, collaboration, and effective challenge.

  • Support and coach fellow associates to reach their goals, including providing timely, specific, actionable feedback.

  • Appreciate and elevate great performance, in accordance with company values.

Excellence & Risk Management:

  • Adopt a “running the business” mindset, managing risks, ensuring data integrity, and promoting an overall well-managed environment.

  • Maintain overall responsibility for deal structure and economics; originate and follow transactions through closing, working closely with Credit, Underwriting, Loan Administration and other key partners throughout.

  • Regularly evaluate and contribute to the improvement of our processes; always look to drive simple, scalable impact and durable results.

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of the bank, its customers, portfolio exposure, competitive environment, economic trends and policies.

  • Partner with business and Community Finance functions to foster an environment of open dialogue around risk tolerance and credit appetite.

  • Partner seamlessly with internal and external teams to develop and meet key milestones throughout the deal lifecycle.

  • Coordinate with various CF functional teams and other departments in the servicing of client relationships.

“We recognize that many life paths can contribute to interest in this role. We value all experience, whether gained in a classroom or through other paths, and invite everyone who meets the qualifications to apply for this role.
