Description

Join Our Exceptional Team at Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC) as a Veterinary Laboratory Assistant!

Are you detail-oriented, passionate about veterinary medicine, and eager to be part of a collaborative, high-performing team? Do you enjoy working behind the scenes to support patient care through accurate diagnostics and strong communication? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

At PVESC, we’re building a supportive community of veterinary professionals dedicated to delivering the highest quality care to our patients and their families. Located in the heart of beautiful southern Maine, PVESC has long been a trusted veterinary hospital known for our comprehensive emergency and specialty services.

We are a busy and growing 26-doctor hospital offering specialized care in surgery, internal medicine, oncology, dermatology, neurology, emergency & critical care, and cardiology. With so many disciplines under one roof, the opportunity to learn and grow here is endless.

We’re currently seeking a Veterinary Lab Assistant to join our team!

In this essential behind-the-scenes role, you’ll support all departments in the processing, preparation, and coordination of laboratory diagnostics. Your attention to detail and ability to recognize abnormalities in samples will play a vital part in the care of our patients. This is a great opportunity for someone with veterinary experience who thrives in a fast-paced, team-centered environment.

Why PVESC?

We believe in building long-term, successful relationships with our team members. That’s why we offer a competitive compensation package that includes:

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, and long-term disability
  • Paid time off, paid volunteer hours, and holiday pay
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Personal pet discount and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Uniform allowance
  • Paid continuing education and professional development opportunities

We value your contributions and encourage you to share your ideas, energy, and creativity to help us grow and succeed. Our collaborative, solution-based approach ensures that everyone is involved in shaping a positive work environment where you can thrive.

Community Impact:

Our team is passionate about giving back to the community. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in events like Pet Rock in the Park , an annual pet-friendly celebration in Portland featuring live music, local vendors, and more.

Requirements

What You’ll Do:
  • Process and prepare lab samples including cytology's, urinalyses, and other in-house or send-out diagnostics
  • Communicate with outside laboratories to coordinate submissions, confirm pricing, and track results
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, ensuring proper documentation and organization
  • Monitor and recognize abnormalities in patient diagnostics and communicate findings to appropriate teams
  • Support all departments—not assigned to just one—allowing for a dynamic and well-rounded experience
Who We’re Looking For:
  • Veterinary experience is preferred —this role needs someone familiar with medical terminology and diagnostic processes
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Comfort with medical record-keeping and data entry
  • A team player who thrives in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Clear and professional communication skills for internal teams and external lab coordination
Ready to Make a Difference?

If you're excited to be part of a high-performing team where your behind-the-scenes work directly supports life-saving care, we’d love to talk with you. Come join our incredible team at PVESC—where every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and make a lasting impact.
