Description
OBJECTIVE:
Conducts essential and advanced repairs and upkeep on various types of vehicles utilized in the postal sector; troubleshoots and identifies intricate vehicle issues utilizing an array of computerized diagnostic tools; may guide less experienced staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assesses operational challenges across different vehicle types and carries out operational checks on engines; evaluates critical support systems, parts, components, and assemblies including emissions systems and electronic controls.
2. Executes a range of computerized and electronic diagnostics using specialized instruments; decodes error codes and utilizes information from diagnostics and analysis tools; references materials such as service manuals and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot operational issues, drivability concerns, and performance metrics.
3. Performs visual inspections and auditory assessments of vehicles, conducts road service calls and performance tests prior to and following maintenance; documents vehicle issues on service orders.
4. Offers technical coaching and instructions to mechanics on complex repairs and the application of specialized diagnostic technology.
5. Conducts maintenance and repairs stemming from standard preventive maintenance evaluations.
6. Maintains and updates vehicle documentation, tracks vehicle-related data; logs hours worked, parts utilized, and other relevant information on service orders.
7. Carries out engine tune-ups; removes, alters, adjusts, and cleans components and accessories; employs specialized diagnostic equipment to align systems and components to required operating standards.
8. Troubleshoots malfunctioning vehicles arising from service calls and identifies faulty components for repair or substitution.
9. Undertakes repairs and replacements of core components such as transmissions, differentials, brake systems, power assist units, and steering/suspension mechanisms.
10. Engages in additional job-related duties to support primary responsibilities.
11. Adheres to all prescribed safety protocols and complies with postal, local, state, and federal environmental guidelines and practices.
FUNCTION:
Engages in routine and sophisticated repairs and maintenance on various motor vehicles utilized in the postal fleet; diagnoses and troubleshoots complex vehicle issues using diverse computerized diagnostic technology; may assist lower-level personnel in their duties.
